Salve! Welcome to the Imperial Romans of New Zealand and Asatru Barbarians!
IMPERIUM ROMANA is an Auckland based Roman Living History group and display club that depicts life in the time of the Roman Empire.
Everyone is welcome! Living History can be a great shared experience. Most join because of an interest in the period and stay because of the friends they make. Try it; you'll like it! You can be a noble senator, matron, slave, legionary, gladiator, gladiatrix, Barbarian civilian or warrior. We welcome families and children.
We have spare gear if you would like to try it out. We train fortnightly and perform at public events, museums, schools, TV commercials, parades and private functions. Members can do multiple genres. The choice is up to the individual. Our displays involve choreographed routines and theatrical story lines. We also work with other groups to put on combined displays. The club has several sub-groups that combine at events to put on displays:

Roles You Can Play
Ancient Roman society was composed of nobles, middle classes, common folk, slaves and military personnel, and the Roman Empire had many enemies they fought, so there are many choices in roles members can play. The club has several sub-groups/sections that combine at events to put on displays:
CIVITAS ROMANUS displays aspects of Roman civilian life and Roman living history. You can be high-born or a slave; or someone in between - a freedman, an Egyptian, Greek or Gaul. For information on being a Roman civilian click here.

LEGIO VI FERRATA ("Iron-clad"), the legionary arm, do military drill and demonstrate Roman military battle tactics. This can be tailored to demonstrate aspects of Roman history in school displays. The Roman army is great fun! For more information click here.
The NZ GLADIATOR SCHOOL (NZGS) trains gladiators and gladiatrix (female gladiators) and performs at public events providing gladiatorial shows. You are invited to train with our champions and feel the excitement of the Arena! (Don't worry it's fake blood). For more information on the NZGS clickhere.
ASATRU BARBARIANS, a new addition to the club, depicts living history and combat of the Celtic and Germanic peoples occupying Europe during the time of the Roman Empire. These members may be used in displays where Celtic or Germanic opponents of Roman armies are needed. For more information click here.
CAVALRY/HORSE DISPLAY UNIT. The Auckland Mounted Re-enactors (AMR) has amalgamated with the Imperium Romana to develop a cavalry unit. This idea was first put forward by founder and former club captain John Maine. Riders can choose either Roman or Barbarian cavalry. For more information click here.
The photos below will give you a quick glance of our group; then explore our site to see what a great experience it can be to join New Zealand’s premier Roman and Barbarian re-enactment group. You can study history, read books and watch movies, but only acting the part of a Roman or Barbarian can truly give you a genuine living history experience of really being there in that time period!
