ANNO MMXIV
2014 was a tough year because our Club Captain, John Maine, was bravely fighting cancer. The Waikato Museum in Hamilton had a three-month long exhibition imported from Italy "Roman Machines: Genius of Julius Caesar!" We were engaged as real Romans for the monthly "Roman Nights" to interact with the public around the exhibits for photo opportunities. Members also gave educational lectures and demonstrations in the sold-out theatre that were very well-received. Our Legio VI Ferrata gave Roman fighting displays in the courtyard, and Gladiator fights in the main foyer of circular audience. The show proved so popular that the Museum extended it for an extra month.
Sadly our beloved John passed away in November, and we were the Roman Guard of Honour at his Service. At Cambridge Armistice we set up our Roman camp with the X Legion, and we held a joint Roman ceremony in remembrance of John - Dis Manibus, Sacred to the Spirits. Our two-day long Gladiator Games were announced to the audience as being held in John's honour. The year ended with the Glen Eden Santa Parade, which had been one of John's first and favourite events, along with the Queen Street Xmas Parade. Our end of year Saturnalia party we were in a reflective mood on the loss of our loved ones, and determined to enjoy this brief time we all have here together.
