HOWICK MILITARY TATTOO, 22 FEB 2015
The Howick Military Tattoo includes displays by the NZ Army, Vikings and WWII re-enactment clubs. Here we see our gladiators right after the show in front of our Roman camp.
Our Roman living history camp with its display of gladiator equipment attracted a lot of interest from the public and re-enactors present at the event. We involved the children with face painting, blow-up axes and tuition on how to shoot a longbow. Please click on the pics for full-size image
Our Roman soldiers of Legio VI Ferrata put on a display of Roman marching drill and military formations.
The NZ Gladiator School show starred two runaway slaves, Idunna (Petra White) and Petronius (Peter Rogers) who were dragged into the arena for summary execution. To entertain the crowd they were tossed weapons and ordered to fight each other, but they instead turned on their captors (Jason Saunders and David Layzell) and killed them. Rome's two champion gladiators raced into the arena, the Thraex (Martin Layzell) to kill Petronius, and the Dimachaerus (Chris) to kill Iduna. This was a fierce battle, at one point the Thraex was smashed flat on his back, and in another tense moment Iduna stumbled backwards and tripped over a gladiator corpse, only narrowly avoiding certain death. The two slaves were victorious and were granted freedom for their valor!
