Roman Sister Clubs
In New Zealand we work with our Roman sister clubs.
The 5th Cohort of the 10th Legion (Legio X Fretensis, Cohors V) is led by Dr Hans-Dieter Bader (an experienced archaeologist) and Darryl Thomas (weapons-maker extraordinaire) based in New Plymouth. We meet annually to build a large joint Roman camp at the Armistice, Lake Karapiro, Cambridge. We also cooperate on many other Roman projects. Hans has provided advice, and Darryl built much of our weaponry, including combat shields and pila. The 5th are a really great bunch of guys. Here is an an interview with Hans from Mens Mag NZ. |
The Legio VII Inferus based in Wellington is led by Murray Hill as the Roman military arm of 22AD Ancient and Medieval Artillery, along with his trusty sidekick Gus Van Buren-Schele. We work together on joint Roman camps, including Armistice and the Medieval Faire, and often assist Murray with his large arsenal of Roman artillery and medieval trebuchets.
Murray has free catapult plans on his website, or facebook page, and has published an authoritative book Codex Catapultae available HERE.

Overseas Roman Sister Clubs

We have forged alliances with overseas Roman sister clubs.
The Legio XX is based in the Washington DC area, led by Mathew Amt and Richard Campbell. They are a very experienced club and the Legio XX website is a great resource for Roman re-enactment information and advice. The Legio XX facebook page is also very active.
Richard is in charge of the long-running RAT (Roman Army Talk) website and RAT facebook page that is a lively discussion group for all aspects of the Roman Army.
In May 2015 Brett and Lisa visited Richard and Allison in Washington. Richard has an extensive workshop, many fascinating current projects under way, and a large collection of Roman gear. Allison runs a Roman women's group, and has a lot of great ideas for crafts and activities, including running a portable Roman caupona.

The Legio III Cyrenaica based in New England is led by Quinton Johannsen and Andy Volpe. They perform regular Roman displays at the Worcester Art Museum and also at the Boston Museum of Science.
As Brett is a regular visitor to Boston, we plan to stay in closer contact developing Roman ideas.

We liaise with many overseas Roman and Gladiator groups, especially in Europe, Britain and Ireland with which we are forging closer links. The Roman Reenactors Survey shows the world groups (with their contact details) on google maps.
Here is the original first draft of the survey that now includes over 140 clubs, with New Zealand at Number 1.
